Mthethwa's project is to restore and celebrate the dignity of his subjects. On one register, the commercial origin of much of the colourful imagery communicates a peculiar tension between the individuality of the portraits subjects and the mass market of consumer products; and, on another, the dramatic brilliance of the colour seems to explode the claustrophobic dimensions of these tiny domestic spaces with an expression of transcendent and irresistible energy.
