In Women in Private Spaces, Mthethwa makes use of the principles and traditions of Western painting. Rooms become the expression of inner states. But even the few possible personal objects have for the most part disappeared from the pictures. Hostels are public spaces. The stone, monochrome painted walls of the bleak rooms are reminiscent in their clear colours of landscapes in which women appear almost as monoliths, mythic icons of womanliness. |
