TURBULENT, 1998
a project by SHIRIN NESHAT
With the collaboration of Marco Noire Contemporary Art
Video installation b/w, 10 minutes

| details |

Shirin Neshat’s images are enhanced by the spirit and the emotional qualities she has found in contemporary Iranian women. Her images are a visualisation, both in photograph and in video, of the words: they are minimal, emotional, complex but concise. Like a writer she established her vocabulary: the veil, the body, the text, the firearms, and she continued to improvise within this framework. The application of the text over her photograph functions as a voice, a voice to question the stereotypically negative and victimising qualities associated with Islamic women. Shrin Neshat work relationship with Marco Noire Contemporary Art stated in 1997 with the solo exhibition Women of Allah in Marco Noire Show Room, followed by the publication of the first existing monograph on that Artist.
In 1998 they made a collaboration on Turbulent, a two screens video installation with b/w images and sound, specially made for ARCO- Madrid Project Room, where it won the First Prize. After ARCO Art Fair Turbulent travelled into the most important museums and at the Venice Biennial won its second award.
The photographs of the video were subjects of Shirin Neshat’s second solo exhibition in 1999 at the Marco Noire Contemporary Art.
